8. If the company whose site you’ve been workind for has decided to move all of its content to a new domain, what steps would you take?

If your new domain has a good domain age and contains keywords that you need to optimize than I would go ahead and do it but be sure to 301 redirect your old domain to your new domain. If you will use the exact same content, use the canonical tag to avoid duplicate content because this is a true killer of SEO. But if your current website has a good rank i wouldn’t make any changes to it.

9. What is Latent Semantic Analysis (LSI Indexing)?

The contents of a webpage are crawled by a search engine and the most common words and phrases are collated and identified as the keywords for the page. LSI looks for synonyms related to the title of your page. For example, if the title of your page was “Classic Cars”, the search engine would expect to find words relating to that subject in the content of the page as well, i.e. “collectors”, “automobile”, “Bentley”, “Austin” and “car auctions”.

10. What is Phrase Based Indexing and Retrieval and what roles does it play?

Phrase based indexing and retrieval is a system designed by Google to retrieve information by using phrases to list, rank, define and search documents on the internet. It looks at how the phrases are used on the internet and determines whether they are good or valid phrases to be on the web. This system also considers how frequently a phrase has been used and determines their significance on the internet and also compares how certain common phrases are used in place of or together with other phrases. If a certain phrase is used very frequently, it may be used to determine relation in content for web contents or simply web pages that will produce the same search results. The phrase based indexing and retrieval system can also use this same technique to determine any spam activity based on how many times a phrase is used on one document.

11. What kind of strategies do you normally implement for backlinks?

Usually the link building strategies and that all contains all off page optimization techniques. I always follow legal and manual link building strategies. Assuming you are referring to reciprocal linking… Do a search for the keywords you are using on your own site. Take the top results and check the site’s google rank. Higher ranked sites pointing at you are worth more than lower ranked sites. Your link page should be accessible from the home page and should include keywords in your outgoing and incoming links. Contact the webmasters of sites you want links from and directly offer an exchange. You can use software to track these links to make sure they remain live. You can also get good incoming links by writing and submitting articles to online publications with a link back included in the signature of the article.

12. What role does social media play in an SEO strategy?

Earning inbound links from social media sites that have high Google Authority (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+) plays an important role in your SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

If your content is shared through a popular social platform (i.e., a link to a blog post frequently shared or cited on Twitter), your content receives a tremendous boost in how it ranks in SERPs because Twitter has a significiant Google Authority.

If another high authority social media site such as one of the blogs in the Advertising Age Power 150 links to this popular blog post or content, you earn the benefits of a site with high Google Authority (because blogs are also a social media platform).

13. What things wouldn’t you to do increase rankings because the risk of penalty is too high?

I would avoid any site with the appearance of a link farm. I would also avoid any “spam” practice such as unsolicited email campaigns, certain affiliate advertising sites, sites that re-direct visitors to your site, and anything resembling the practices of Zango.

14. What’s the difference bewtween PageRank and ToolBar PageRank?

PR – Page rank

Google’s page rank, also known as link juice is the culmination of backlinks to a site. Over time the amount of page rank you have, grows, or subsequently falls due to various reasons. The higher your pagerank is the more pages google will crawl on your site and the increased frequency in which they will visit your site. The actual number of your page rank is only known by google, inside the googleplex. No one outside google knows what the exact Page rank of a given page is at any one point.

TBPR – Toolbar page rank

This is the page rank displayed on your google toolbar. It is generally update by google once every 4 months. However we have not had a full update now for 6+ months and counting. Its value is vague and often irrelevant. It varies from datacenter to datacenter and is never in “real” time. A page could have a PR 6 score but show TBPR of only 2 because it has not been updated in months. TBPR is a vanity stat in today’s game and should not be relied on for any valuable meaning.

15. Why might you want to use nofollow on an internal link?

We have a product navigation engine that allow our customers to filter products based on attributes (size, color, etc.). We are implementing an upgrade that allows them to use “multi-select” refinements. Basically they can say “show me all the red, blue, and green products”. We want the search engines to crawl just the first page without any refinements. We’ve set the canonical of the page with refinments on it to the one without any refinements.

From a system resource standpoint I’m not sure I want google crawling all of those refinements links. The links that those refinements generate can be exponentially different based on the the order of the refinements, how many have been selected, etc. It just seems like a waste for google to try and index those pages.

Should I put a no-follow tag on those refinement URL’s so that Google doesn’t even crawl them?
